Research

For this task, we had to choose an urban legend to base our work on. I chose 'Mahsuri'. The turning point I chose is when she got stabbed with her family's 'keris' and bled white blood, signifying innocence. Some birds also flew over her to cover her body. With her last breath, she cursed Langkawi to have seven years of bad luck. I chose Mahsuri because of how it portrays rumours and how those people perceive them.

I based her clothes on the reference in Fig 2.1.

Fig 3.5. Process #5, Week 7 (8/11/2023)

In this one, I added gradients and textures to all elements except for the white so I could emphasize it.

Fig 3.7. Process #7, Week 7 (8/11/2023)

At first, this was my final work. However, it looked too simple and did not look like art deco, but more of a poster.

Fig 3.8. Process #8, Week 8 (17/11/2023)

I decided to add her face in the background, signifying her anger to the village for not believing her.

Animation

For the animation, I originally planned to do something more complex using After Effects (something I'm more familiar with); however, it did not allow me to import CMYK jpegs. So, I went with something more simple and animated it on Photoshop instead.

Fig 5.1 - 5.3. Different versions of the illustration, Week 10 (27/11/2023)

I exported the illustration with plain text, no birds and one with no text and birds. This was so that I could have less trouble animating.

Fig 5.4. Animation frames, Week 10 (27/11/2023)

The animation had a total of 10 frames.
